Saw John McLaughlin, must've been in '92, I used to have the ticket stub but can't even remember the season, in Toronto at a place then called the Diamond club (always amazes me that such great people can end up playing such lousy places!).
At any rate what, importantly, I do remember is that after being 5 hours late, due to a delayed flight from New York, we heard, John McLaughlin showed up with Trilok Gurtu and Jonas Hellborg and started playing they're non-stop 2+hrs set at 12:30 at night! Despite delays and the hour they were focused and delivered perfection. The total control they had was unbelievable. Jonas Hellborg blew my socks off, I'd never heard of him before that. He is one amazing electric bassist. Trilok Gurtu was unbelievable as well, his solo was mesmerizing. John McLaughlin was simply the understated master of the set. Excellent concert; worth the 5 hour wait!
