A square in Lucca, Italy. Something about these
wide open spaces really gets you. I find this a
a common feature of many European cities but not
the UK.

The statue is of the famous guy who got Italy united.
He is so famous I cannot recall his name!

One of many cathedrals in the old town in Lucca.
Superb architecture

I was truly struck by this - a church in the middle
of downtown Montreal (Canada). Right in the middle of
the shopping district of St. Catherine lies this
wonderful church.

They are transforming the docks in Montreal. This little
marina was built recently, and one can take boat rides
from here - which I did!

Pisa is a small city, with lots of character. I was
however, rather disappointed with the leaning tower,
although the surrounding cathedral is quite impressive.
The Piazza del Duomo is just a splendid piece of architecture,
the beautiful white marble buildings, framed by the remains of
the wall surrounding the city, suggest an almost surreal
existence in the centre of Pisa.

These are two views of Pisa from the Royal Victoria Hotel
situated at the Lungarno Pacinotti - a wonderful place to stay!

Castelvecchio Pascoli, Italy, where the PSE
conference was held. This is a wonderful resort about
2 hours away from Pisa. It is very hard to get to, and
once you are here, only Olympic athlete can climb down
the mountain to visit the local town.

A beautiful setting though -- and has almost the same
look and feel as Daghstuhl in Germany
