Research Interests

My research is in biodiversity informatics, which is allied to bioinformatics and focusses on the modelling and analysis of species diversity data, which has challenging features such as subjective nomenclature and classification and complex descriptive data. I work in two areas: (i) techniques for extracting numerical descriptions suitable for multivariate analysis from biological images, and (ii) the interoperability of biological information systems, in which earlier work designing and implementing species databases has led to current projects building federated global species information systems, addressing data quality issues, and making these resources available for use in Grid-based problem-solving environments.

Current & Recent Research Projects

  • Indexing for Life (I4Life), EC (FP7).
