Example PhD

Lot sizing and its effect on scheduling and inventory

Supervisor: Dr C.L. Mumford

Keywords: lot sizing, metaheuristic algorithms, multiobjective optimization, MTO (make to order), MTS (make to stock).

Large batches make efficient use of manufacturing machinery and labour, yet large stock inventory can be very costly. This PhD will investigate the trade-offs between lot sizes, scheduling and inventory and, though the use of multi-objective optimization techniques, will explore the balance of conflicting objectives such as profit and cost, customer service and the environmental impact.

Key Skills/Background: Open to computing or mathematics graduates and postgraduates.

Contact: Dr C.L. Mumford to discuss this research topic.
