Differences of scientific opinion and automated inference

Supervisor: Dr A.C. Jones

Keywords: to follow...

Scientists would not always agree about how to describe something, such as what category it belongs to and what properties it has. This is a particularly acute problem in biodiversity research, where there is sometimes difference of expert opinion about what range of variation is covered by an individual species, how many species a group of organisms is divided into, what terms are used to describe characteristics of each species, etc. In this project we shall be developing techniques for determining what properties of organisms can be inferred using data from resources in which such problems of differences of opinion exist.
