High Performance Algorithms for Motif Searching

Supervisor: Dr C. Walker

Keywords: Motif Search, Parallel programming

Motif searching has long been a challenge for both biologists and computer scientists. Although this topic has been extensively studied in recent years, it remains a challenge. Different approaches and tools have been developed to provide exact solutions, or approximate solutions, to the problem. However, most of the approaches developed have failed to exploit high-performance computers capable of rapidly processing multiple threads of execution in parallel. This project will research into current motif finding algorithms in the context of current and emerging high performance computing platforms, and seek to discover new high-performance algorithms for the motif search problem.

Key Skills/Background: Strong problem-solving ability and 2.1 degree in computer science or related subjects with good programming experience.
