Strain Energy for Registration of Deforming Objects

Supervisor: Professor R.R. Martin

Keywords: Geometric Computing, Graphics, Image Processing, Computer Vision.

Registration for rigid objects, or partial objects, is the problem of finding a translation and rotation which best aligns them. More recently, attention has turned to registration of non-rigid objects, whose shape changes over time. In this case, we also need to take into account, and describe, the deformation. The aim of this project is to put such methods on a firm basis by using the concept of strain energy from physics (mechanics). The project will involve both developing a theoretical optimisation framework for solving the problem, and implementing software to test the ideas.

Key Skills/Background: Would suit a CS student with excellent mathematical skills, or possibly students with a first degree in physics / engineering.
