Learning What Words Mean from Images
Supervisor: Professor R.R. Martin
Keywords: Image Processing, Computer Vision, Machine Learning.
Recent work has shown how the vast number of images retrieved by Google Image Search can be used for such tasks as generating new photos from a sketch, based on careful filtering of the results to reject potentially unwanted results. The aim of this project is to describe images in a feature space, and to attempt to learn about the real-world by associating the results returned by image searches with English words. As different coordinates in feature space will correspond to shape, colour, size, orientation, etc, we hope to learn the relationship between English words and features, giving a program which learns what various words mean.
Key Skills/Background: Would suit a CS student with excellent mathematical skills.
