Due to their highly three dimensional structure, the desmids are not visible wholly in focus under a microscope. In our research, we solved this problem by taking "stacks" of images with different parts of a desmid visible in focus in each image, and applying adapted extended depth of focus algorithms to these stacks of images. Below you can see some of the produced "all-in-focus" images. An article describing a new desmid protocol and a novel desmid visualisation technique will be displayed on the web-site shortly.

Examples of the stacks of desmid images can be found on the main DIADIST web site hosted at Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh.

Matlab code for fusing a number of desmid images to produce one all-in-focus image can be downloaded here.
